Optimum Performance: Balance a Demanding Job and Working Out

working out

Performing at your best is all about being able to strike the right balance between the various demands on your time. However, strive though we might to balance work, wellness, fitness, and social demands, it’s all too easy for certain aspects of life to take a backseat to other, seemingly more urgent tasks. When work deadlines loom, meetings spill into after-hours, or admin simply has to be done, the area we all tend to neglect is our fitness. After all, skipping a workout or trading wellness for convenience is easy to do when you’re striving to reach the top of your field. But fitness isn’t just a “nice to have.” It’s invaluable if we want to continue to perform at the highest possible levels.

Why Working Out Matters

The benefits of working out are well documented. Regular physical activity supports physical health, improves mental health and mood, and is good for focus and concentration. Working out also relieves anxiety and promotes good sleep habits. Dedicating time to moving our bodies can also help clear mental blocks, can provide opportunities to reflect and reset, and can even be a great way to socialize with others. Sweating it out, then, is good for the mind, body, and soul.

While we often think about working out involving long runs or lengthy sessions at the gym, a mere 15 minutes a day is enough to deliver results. Even if your schedule is challenging and you’re working long hours, a few minutes of mindful movement throughout the course of the day can add up.

Incorporating Movement Into Your Day

If finding time to work out feels like a losing battle, it’s time to take a look hard look at your daily routine and see where your time is going. Often it’s a matter of prioritization. Are there tasks you could group together, delegate, or cut altogether to free up additional time? Or perhaps even some that you could do while on the move? Tasks like reviewing voicemails, reading emails, taking phone calls, or listening to business-related audiobooks can be completed while walking or on the stationary bike.

Another option is to aim for a total amount of movement broken up throughout the course of the day. Take the stairs, walk from the far end of the parking lot, jog around the building, or try for a quick “sprint” on a treadmill or elliptical. You’ll quickly cobble together enough active minutes to meet the recommended movement guidelines.

Treat Your Health Like You Would a Client

Ideally, however, working out isn’t just something you cram in between meetings or emails. It’s a vital part of your health and wellbeing and can help you level up your performance from good to great. While impromptu bursts of movement are certainly beneficial, you’ll get the best results from a dedicated wellness routine. That means scheduling your workouts into your calendar and honoring the commitment to yourself. It may take a little while for the routine to catch on, but given time enough, working out will become a key performance-enhancing part of your day.
